America being a cold country has a unique relationship with alcohol. I am sure you must always wonder about the average amount of liquor consumption in America. Beer is American’s top choice drink over wine and hard liquor. It is estimated that more than 99 million Americans drink beer on a daily basis.
An annual survey conducted by the Beer Institute states that the beer consumption in America is equivalent to the consumption of their favorite dessert apple pie.
Now the new intriguing question is – which state takes the most share of the national beer intake? Well, the Beer Institute brings the right answer to this question with its state-by-state beer consumption data. It adopts a strategy wherein it calculates the amount of beer sold in each state and divides it by the number of citizens old enough to drink legally on an annual basis. The result obtained reveals the country’s most beer-loving states.
Joe McClain, president of the Beer Institute, in a release said, “From hops producers to can and bottle makers in communities across the country, beer is an economic engine that contributes more than $246 billion to the U.S. economy,”
And none-the-less how can we forget about the country’s rising demand for craft beer. Brewers Association confirms that craft brewers sold more than 13.2 million barrels of beer last year. It is a notable amount of the rise in percentage since 2011. Thus you can get the idea that it is not only the industry giants that is driving the country’s beer economy.
Let’s now check out the Beer Institute’s list with the highest and lowest beer consuming states.
1. Most – North Dakota
45.8 gallons of beer per capita per year
North Dakota consumes the most amount of beer than any other states in America. The reason behind the massive consumption is considered to be employment. Because of its oil and gas boom North Dakota has a lot of employed young males.
2. Most – New Hampshire
43.9 gallons of beer per capita per year
The reason behind the surpass amount of beer consumption is considered to be the abundance of the state in its rich tradition of world-class breweries, such as Smuttynose and Portsmouth Breweries. Another reason is that the residents do not need to pay direct tax on beer bottles.
3. Most- Montana
43.9 gallons of beer per capita per year
Montana has some 30 craft breweries in the state. They have the tradition of drinking a lot of beers in one go. Around 20.8 percent of the state’s adults are considered to be binge drinkers. This state holds the 9th position in terms of the number of adult heavy drinkers.
4. Most- South Dakota
38.9 gallons of beer per capita per year
South Dakota is one of the least populous states in the country with just 10 breweries. But still it manages to stand on the fourth position. According to a survey by the CDC, over 22 percent of the state’s adults are engaged in binge drinking.
5. Most – Wisconsin
36.2 gallons of beer per capita per year
Wisconsin has 132 breweries and contributed around $8.6 billion to the states economic output in 2012. It also covers 3.3 percent of the state’s GDP. This contribution is higher than most other states in the country. Wisconsin comprises of the highest percentage of binge drinkers throughout the nation.
6. Least – Kentucky
24.4 gallons of beer per capita per year
The reason behind the less consumption of beer in Kentucky is considered to be its heavy tax on beer. It has a $0.43 per six-pack in state beer tax which is very high compared to neighboring Indiana. More than 40 percent of the retail cost of beer paid by consumers goes as tax.
7. Least – Maryland
23.2 gallons of beer per capita per year
Beer is not that famous in Maryland. We advocated no change in the consumption rate of beer or shipments last year. Marylanders drank only 23.2 gallons of beer in 2012. It made them the 47th nation in the list in terms of beer intake.
8. Least – New York
22.4 gallons of beer per capita per year
New York is best known for its craft beer but the state as a whole isn’t much into big-brewery beer. New York has a total of 89 active breweries in the state. You can buy beer in the grocery store and can even purchase it on Sundays. But still, this state is ranked the least in terms of total beer consumption.
9. Least – New Jersey
22.4 gallons of beer per capita per year
New Jersey is ranked 48th in the nation for per capita consumption of beer. This should not be shocking because the state has no breweries at all. The state has no contribution on the Top 100 list of Rate Beer or Beer Advocate’s Top 250 Beers in the World list.
10Least – Connecticut
22.1 gallons of beer per capita per year
This state is ranked second to last in beer consumption. Beer is not that famous among its residents because the majority prefers up market cocktails and wines. Bloomberg recently ranked Connecticut the worst state in terms of unemployment. This may be another reason for the fall in beer intake.
