The Indian bridge making infrastructure is seen to be on the hot platter in the Indian market. The longest rail bridge in the country at 4.62km is located in the state of Kerala known as Vembanad Rail Bridge. However, India’s longest rail-cum-road bridge is under construction on the river Gange in Patna, Bihar. Below is the list of the top 10 Longest Railway Bridges in India.
1. Vembanad Bridge, Kerala
The Vembanad Rail Bridge is the most beautiful bridge in Kerala that connects Edappally and Vallarpadam in Kochi. It is considered as one of the longest railway bridge in India with the total length of 4.62 km. This bridge lets only 15 trains to pass each day. Vembanad Bridge is build over the backwaters of Vembanad Lake and passes through the 3 small islands. Vembanad Lake is the longest lake in India and the largest lake of Kerala and is also ranked as one of the largest Indian lakes that is famous as the host of the traditional sports, Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race.
2. Havelock Bridge, Andhra Pradesh
The Havelock Bridge or old Godavari Bridge is seen over the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh and is 2.7 km long. The bridge was initially built as a replacement for Havelock bridge but now is used to host civic water supply pipelines. Holy Godavari River, also known as Kovvur-Rajahmundry Bridge is Asia’s second longest road-cum-rail bridge crossing a water body.
3. Upper Son Bridge, Bihar
The Upper Son Bridge or the Nehru Setu rail bridge is the second longest railway bridge in India with total length of 3.065 km. It is so far the longest railway bridge in India build across the Son River in Bihar. Nehru Setu connects Dehri-on-Son and Son Nagar. There is a river road bridge Jawahar Setu on National Highway 2 NH-2 running parallel to the long Nehru Setu rail bridge.
4. Mahanadi Rail Bridge, Orissa
The Mahanadi Rail Bridge is another longest railway bridge that runs over the great Mahanadi river. There are two sections of this bridge. The second Mahanadi railway bridge is located near Cuttack in the Indian state of Orissa and the first is located near Bhootmundei. The second Mahanadi rail bridge is one of the longest Indian Railways Bridge and the biggest bridge in Orissa. The Great River also provide shelter to one of the biggest dam in India known as the Hirakud Dam situated in Sambalpur district.
5. Godavari Arch Bridge, Andhra Pradesh
The new Godavari Bridge is one of the longest span prestressed concrete arch bridges in Asia. Jayakwadi dam near Paithan is one of the largest earthen dams in India build over holy river Godavari in state of Andhra Pradesh. The new Godavari arch bridge is a single Railway lane bridge which replaces the parallel running old Godavari bridge.
6. Pamban Bridge, Tamil Nadu
The cantilever railway bridge is the second longest sea bridge in India (after Bandra-Worli Sea Link). The Pamban Bridge is India’s first sea bridge and third longest rail bridge in India, build across the Palk Strait water body. It is also known as Rameshwaram bridge as it is located in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu and connects Rameswaram island to mainland of India. There is also a two lanes Pamban Road Bridge running parallel to the cantilever railway bridge.
7. Konkan Railway Bridge, Goa
Zuari Bridge is built on the Zuari River in Goa. The bridge is 1,319 km long and is known as the longest bridge of the Konkan rail network. It is one of the most beautiful train routes in India connecting Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. The Karbude tunnel which is the longest rail tunnel in India is situated on Konkan Railway route near Ratnagiri in Maharashtra.
8. Sharavathi River Bridge, Honnavar
Sharavathi Bridge is the longest railway bridge situated near Honnavar. It is 2,060 km long and is originated from Linganamakki dam in the Sagara taluk and flows towards west, one of the westward flowing rivers of India. The river basin lies in the Western Ghats which is famous for its rare collection of flora and fauna.
9. Jubilee Bridge Hooghly, Calcutta
Jubilee Bridge over the river Hooghly between Naihati and Bandel in Calcutta is one of the oldest railway bridges in India. But, it will be replaced by a new rail bridge built adjacent to, the Sampreeti bridge soon.
10. Balawali Railway Bridge, Uttar Pradesh
The Balawali railway bridge is built across the holy river Ganga near Balawali between the Laksar Najibabad Railway routes in Uttar Pradesh and runs parallel to Balawali Road Bridge. The Chenab river railway bridge will be the tallest railway bridge in the world after it finishes its construction process. However, the Panvalnadi Bridge on the Panval River in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra is the tallest bridge in India as of now.
