Ayurveda Massage aimed at calming the nerves and stimulating blood flow originated in India. The early literature on ayurveda was written in Vedic period in the country. It came into existence only to cure various diseases naturally. Ayurvedic medicines have always been a form of Alternative Medicine since its inception.
A significantly important part of Ayurveda people take special consideration about all round the world to free them from the hectic and monotonous life is ‘THE MASSAGE’.
What is massage, you ask? It is none but working and applying pressure on body only to stimulate the better functioning of the muscles and tissues. It also fastens any healing process thereby providing relaxation and well being. A few of the target points are tissues, joints, skin, muscles etc. It can be given by hands, fingers, elbow, knees, forearms and feet too. Massage is continuously growing in demand due to the heavy work flow this century.
I personally am a huge massage enthusiast and take more than four massages every month. I find it a great way to relief by day’s tiredness. Thus, Ayurvedic Massage can be a powerful tool to help you take charge of your health too. It makes you feel comfortable and bring back your zeal to get back to work with a better mood. It lightens off your burden. Massage gives me confidence.
A few of the Ayurvedic massage techniques are:
1. Panchkarma
A technique to purify and detoxify toxic metabolites of the body.
The various Toxins used:
- Vata for Basti therapy (Medicated enima)
- Pitta for Virechana (Colonic errigation)
- Kapha for Vamanam (Medicated vomitting)
Duration of therapy – 7, 14, 21, 40 days
The therapy helps in the normal functioning of all the tissues and the 5 sense organs to enhance digestion and metabolism in the body. It also helps in eliminating diseases from root and maintains harmony among body, mind and soul to rejuvenate the body.
2. Shirodhara
Shirodhara is a head massage done with herbal oils or medicated milk that is poured gently and steadily over forehead only to give deeper deep relaxation of nervous system and peace. It improves the functioning of the sense organs and is a great help to cure stress, anxiety, hair loss, fatigue, eliminating stress and anxiety.
3. Pizhichil or oil bath
Pizhichil is medicated oil or milk that is poured continuous stream on body by 4 therapists in 1 hour. It works as free radical scavenger, toning, strengthening and rejuvenating the whole body. It cures chronic fatigue syndrome, paralysis and fractures too.
4. Abhyangam
Abhyangam meaning massage, therapeutically condition your body. The treatment is done with different oils for different diseases and help in increasing WBC, antibodies, resistance to viruses and immunity.
5. Shiorabhyangam
Shiorabhyangam massages the head with gentle deep stroke at the vital energy center. It promotes rejuvenation and relieve insomnia, headache, stress, improve vision, concentration boosts immune system and improve the functioning of the sense organs, blood circulation and detoxification.
6. Mukhalepam
In Mukhalepam skin care therapy, different herbs are made into a paste and applied on face for 30-45 minutes. It is then massaged off. It prevents ageing, wrinkling of skin and toning thus curing sun burns.
7. Udhwartanam
Udhwartanam is done with herbal powder and helps in curing paralysis, obesity and rheumatic diseases. You need to take this massage for 30-40 minutes for 7 to 28 days. It is of a great help in tightening loose skin and strengthening muscles. It also reduces obesity and cholesterol in the body.
8. Padabhyangam
In Padabhyangam the feet is massaged on the vital points where most of nerves of the body ends. It is useful for strengthening and restoring body health. It also cures insomnia, fatigue and cramps.
9. Januvasti
In Januvasti a round wall area made by black gram paste is placed on the knee and is filled with warm medicated oil which is removed after sometime. It gives a kind of soothing and relieving effect to the knee joint.
10. Netratarpanam
Netratarpanam is for relaxing or lubricating the eye. An enclosure is made of black gram paste around eyes and lukewarm ghee is added for 15-20 minutes. It lubricates the eyes and removes pollutants, dusts etc and gives soothing effect to the eyes.
11. Kativasti
Kativasti is a treatment for various back problems such as lower backache. A container is made of black gram dough on the lower back and is filled with lukewarm oil. The set up is removed after 30 minutes and the back is massaged with same oil. It cures sciatica and osteo-artritis.
12. Karanpurna
Karanpurna is where warm medicated oil is poured into the ears and then massaged gently. It stimulates the sense organs, calm the mind, ear ache and sinus. It is also a good treatment for plastic surgery as well.
13. Elakhezi
Elakhezi uses herbal leaves fried in Neem oil addition lemon pieces and coconut scapes tied in bolosus and dipped in medicated oil to massage the body. Later you will be bathed with warm water. It is a great cure for arthritis, paralysis and body pain.
14. Navarkhizi
In Navarkhizi specially cooked rice is tied in bolosus and warmed in mixture of Balamoola Kasaya and cow’s milk and massaged all over body under adequate pressure. It helps in the treatment of joint pain, rheumatic diseases, nervous system and keeps you strong.
15. Podikhizi
Podikhizi uses herbal powder of roots of 12 plants like dry ginger, ricinus, sandalwood etc that is fried with a little rock salt, coconut and lemon juice and tied in bolosus and heated.
