Avoiding the doctor
In a recent research by the charity Men’s Health Forum it was concluded that men are 20% less likely than women to visit their doctor in spite of the fact that they have shorter life spans compared to women and are more likely to die from cancer. They find visiting the doctor an unpleasant experience and rather prefer self check. Many men even avoid health self-checks because of fear, denial of the risks, or confusion. It is very important that men should have themselves checked for signs of testicular cancer as this disease is on the rise today, especially in young and middle-aged men.
Binge drinking
Binge drinking is very common in men compared to women. As such the alcohol-related deaths and hospitalizations in men are on the rise. Binge drinking affects long term health and puts the immediate safety at risk. It also leads to obesity. Put a check on your heath by sticking to limited drinking.
Bottling things up
Men can hardly talk about their feelings, express emotion or ask for help and support compared to women. This may be another reason why men suffer more from depression compared to women. It is surveyed that 77 per cent of men are more likely to commit suicide. Depressed men are also twice as likely as depressed women to resort to alcohol and drug abuse. Bottling up anger may prove to be fatal. Men who do not express their anger increase their risk of a heart attack.
Stressing over work
Men and women are equally exposed to workplace stress. But according to a survey of 3,000 workers by Medicash, it was concluded that men are four times more likely than women to take a sick day due to work related stress and are twice as likely to turn to alcohol to help deal with it. Workplace stress may lead in the development of depression, heart disease and stroke. We recommend you to resolve your feelings and ease your stress. Talk to your boss, change your job or seeking professional help, but just be happy!
Taking hot baths
It is found that men enjoy soaking in the tub. But if you are trying to conceive, it is high time that you swap those long baths for showers. University of California, San Francisco, found through their three-year study that hot baths reduce male fertility. The reason is that sperms develop the in cool surroundings. Try to avoid any activity that will over heat the area. This may include sitting in hot tubs or Jacuzzis or even prolonged use of laptops.
Not applying sun cream
According to a research in UK, sunscreens reduce the chances of skin cancer. But only a few out there regularly wear sunscreen of which male are the worst case. Another research by Mintel on sun cream use in France, Germany, Spain and the UK finds that an average of 52 per cent of women use sunscreen compared to only 37 per cent of men. Since men spend more time in outdoor, be it for sports activity or work or leisure, it is more needed to remain covered up with appropriate clothing and sun cream.
Poor bathroom hygiene
According to a study by the American Society for Microbiology and the Soap and Detergent Association, one in three men do not wash their hands after visiting the bathroom. Another study by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine carried out at UK service stations found that only a third of men washed their hands with soap. This is one of the quickest ways to spread germs and infection. Protect your health as well as of those around you by leather up each time you come out of the bathroom.
Not brushing their teeth
According to a study by the American Dental Association, only 66 per cent of men brush their teeth twice or more a day, compared to 86 per cent of women. Another research findings published in the Journal of Periodontology showed that women are almost twice as likely to have regular dental checkups as men. Researches have shown that gum disease can increase the risk of heart disease, erectile dysfunction and dementia.
Eating fast food
The fast food culture is picking up pace today. Especially men are too much into junk food. A survey by Pew Research Center concludes that 47 per cent of men eat in a fast food restaurant on a weekly basis compared to women with 35 percent. Since fast food contains high amount of calories and copious amounts of salt, try to replace your fast food with home-cooked meals.
