The era we are living in is regarded as the Digital Era. Today, our lives are completely intertwined with the development of technology. It has sum up as a day without a computer is like a year without rain. Computers were initially used for computing purposes, but have become the prime unit of the working world today. Starting ripe from the size of a large room, computers have evolved into smaller desktop PCs, laptops, notebooks and now to tablets. The processor speed, size, memory capacity, everything has been developed with each of the generation of computers.
People are fascinated when it comes to high end machines and user friendly gadgets. But to what extent are they ready to compromise on their performance? Even though the computers are becoming more compact and stylish, the desktop PCs that are considered as bulky and huge are preferred more by most people compared to those ultra slim laptops. Here are the top 10 reasons as to why:
10. Cost
Every one fantasizes about gadgets that are latest in technology and best in quality and available at a cheaper price. Who does not want to save money? But today, the thinner and cozier gadget gets, the higher the price you need to pay. Laptop comes with a keyboard, monitor screen, processor and the memory and hard disks embedded into a single compact unit. The use of special and high end technology eventually reflects in its price. The added advantage in opting for a desktop is, if you already have a monitor or keyboard, you may buy a desktop computer with other peripherals and save a lot of money. Well, the same thing is not possible for laptops. In conclusion you may buy a Desktop PC in a relatively cheaper cost compared to a laptop.
9. Safe and Secure
Since, desktop PCs are huge and bulky compared to a laptop, most people do not recognize the fact that it is actually a blessing in disguise. Anybody can sneak your laptop inside a bag or even hide it among the books and take it away under your nose. But, what about desktop computer? Even the thought of being stolen is miles away. Obviously they cannot be stolen that effortlessly because of the size factor. Hence, desktop PCs are far more secure. Plus, you also need not worry about the amount of money you invested in it.
8. Rugged
Your laptop may easily slip through fingers or bag and fall down. But it will never be in the case of desktop. A laptop is more prone to breaking into pieces when dropped down. Their fragility is the main reason as to why they need more cautiousness while handling. In case if broken, the entire laptop has to be sent for repair. If any one of the components of the laptop is faulty, say, the keyboard is faulty, you have to send the whole laptop for servicing. Many a times, due to a single component’s failure, you may have to replace the entire product. With desktop PC you have no such issues. You may repair only the part that needs repairing individually. For example, change only the keyboard or the mouse that needs repairing. It reduces your repair expenses to a great extent.
7. Power Supply
The power supply is the fuel to every electronic product. Since, Laptops run on batteries, if it runs out of charge, the laptop dies down too. Again, the laptop batteries can be charged and discharged only up to certain specified limited number of cycles depending on the manufacturer and than you need to replace it with a new one. Desktop computers are best in this case. Since, they make use of constant power supply as the power source instead of a battery, it is always connected to it. It also uses UPS, so you need not bother yourself with the trouble of it being discharged.
6. Ethernet and Peripherals
Computers are not only used for storing data. It is also used for listening to music, playing games, watching videos, using web cam for video conferencing and a lot more. You can not most certainly connect mouse, keyboard, webcam, headset and pen drive on your laptop at once. But, when it comes to your PC, yes you can. You can add tons of external peripherals to your desktop PC. Laptops in general have a couple of USB 2.0 ports and sometimes a high end laptop would have a USB 3.0. But a desktop comes with a minimum of four USB ports or even more. Again, in some multiple Ethernet ports are also available thus enhancing the speed of your internet connectivity.
5. Performance
Every electronic device gets heated up due to the processes that keep on taking place inside their internal components. They need to remain cool with some kind of air cooling or liquid cooling system to keep them from burning out. The laptop’s motherboard is enclosed in a smaller framework with lesser number of fans for cooling. This leads to over heating when a large number tasks or heavy load is applied to the processor. But no such limitation is seen in desktop computers. It incorporates more number of fans for air cooling compared to laptops. Some desktop PCs even make use of liquid cooling systems to keep their temperature down making it more durable than a laptop.
4. Gaming and Graphics
Gadget freaks love to play games and work with graphics related content and software on their systems. For better effects, you need to attach graphic cards on to your computer’s motherboard. It works in a way that the greater the number of graphic cards, the better is the quality of visual effects. Unfortunately, Laptops cannot support more than one or two graphic cards. Playing high graphics games on laptops will always remain a fantasy. Coming to desktop computer, it can be modified depending on your needs and add any number of graphic cards and enjoy games and graphics with the best quality effects – something a laptop can never provide.
3. Large and Multiple display
A desktop computer is available with a wide range of display screen sizes in the market. Though a laptop too can provide a maximum size of 17.3 inches, but it is in no way greater when compared to a 20 -24 inch desktop monitor display. Again, for a laptop with 17.3 inch display will obviously look quite huge and would no longer look like a laptop. It would be like you are carrying around your desktop PC. Also, a Desktop PC can add multiple display monitors depending on the number of graphic cards that your computer can support. Laptops can also provide the same using a USB powered display, but it would never be as great as multiple displays on a desktop computer.
2. Processor
Laptop processors are always smaller compared to the Desktop computer processors, the reason being the compact nature of the laptop. Also the laptop processors have to deal with the limitation on “power supply”. As these run on batteries their processors are designed to use less energy and safeguard the battery’s life which ultimately slows down the processor’s speed. But, it is not so in the case of a desktop computers. There are no limitations on space for the motherboard or for the power supply.
1. Easy to upgrade
If you want to increase the size of your RAM or add new PCI cards and IDE disks, you will require a larger motherboard and more number of slots for expansion. But, when it comes to desktop PC, the size of the motherboard doesn’t matter much. In a laptop, the motherboard is fitted in to fixed framework or chassis. Thus it limits the size of the motherboard as the laptops need to be smaller and thinner which leads to limiting of space and prevents the entry of new memory drives in them.
