Gmail has altered its interface quite a number of times over the years. With all the tabs splitting messages in your Inbox and the new Compose window, some of us are sure to get confused and want the old Gmail back. Good news is I have brought you a few effective tweaks to bring back that familiar feeling.
Get Rid of Gmail Tabs
If you feel that the new Gmail tab which can be used to split your inbox into Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums brings nothing useful to your Gmail account, just get rid if it. The trouble is mainly caused by the Promotions tab. Here is how to fix it:
Make the Compose Window Big Again
Last year Google has redesigned the Compose window completely and the new version has become standard for all Gmail users without any route to go back.
Even if there is no way to get rid of the new Compose box, you can however get it to work in full-screen mode. That way you get a bit closer to what it used to be.
After composing a message, click on the More options arrow at the bottom right corner and select Default to full-screen.
New Gmail Compose full screen
Once you have done that, whenever you will click to Compose a message, the window will stretch over a large portion of the screen. It is not the exact old one, but it will be more comfortable.
More Compact, Old Colors
Do you miss that tight look that Gmail used to have in the old days? Well you may still enable it. Click Options (gears icon) on the top right side of the Gmail inbox and select Compact. Your messages will be shown closer to the old look.
Gmail High Contrast theme
Go to Themes in the same menu and select High Contrast and enjoy the sense of similarity.
Your inbox will look somewhat like this:
Go Completely Back in Time
If you want your Gmail window to look exactly like the old interface without the new add ons there is another solution. But note that it will make things more simple from all points of view, but you can always revert to “present day Gmail” if you feel like something is missing.
I am sure you are familiar with the Gmail’s HTML version, designed for slow dial up connections. It bears a striking resemblance to what Gmail used to be in the older versions. If you want this, bookmark this address: https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=html
So, what is your opinion on the changes Gmail frequently make to your inbox? Do you like it or wish to go back to the older version? Leave us your comment.
